A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Preteen Love Story

Throughout this animated journey for preteens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of sleeping youngsters and placing treasure under their pillows. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only a bit more interested in the financial workings of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the ugly gnome he had imagined.

An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s perfectly appropriate for children). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from each other, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. The two species portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet both maintain biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are said to be entitled sorts, prone to stealing anything they want, while goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are in fact bright and technologically advanced.

Of course, this scenario needs a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as quite savage, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression

You won’t find all that many animated films targeting the kind of audience that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not old enough for the content 14-year-olds view these days instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
