Donald Trump Calls on Negotiators to ‘Move Fast’ as Talks Start in the Egyptian Republic
Key Points from Donald Trump’s 20-Point ‘Peace Plan’ for Gaza?
In the event that each faction agree to a detailed list of conditions, the end of fighting will be followed by the liberation of all captives from Israel, including deceased and living, “over a 72-hour period” of Israel publicly accepting the agreement.
In return for the liberation of detainees, Israeli authorities would free 250 Palestinians currently serving life sentences and 1,700 Palestinians in Gaza held since the war began on 7 October 2023 subsequent to the fatal Hamas offensive on Israeli soil.
For every captive from Israel whose remains are released, Israel will release the remains of 15 Palestinians who have died.
The plan does not mandate a full Israeli withdrawal ahead of the release of the hostages. Instead, Israel’s military would withdraw to an agreed upon line, within the Gaza area, to prepare for a hostage release.
The proposal says that every military action, including aerial and artillery bombardment, will be suspended during the liberation procedure and combat positions will be maintained until “terms are fulfilled for the gradual total pullout”.
Once every captive are released, amnesty will be granted to individuals associated with Hamas – the Islamist military group that Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has frequently sworn to destroy – who consent to peaceful coexistence and to decommission their weapons.
Individuals who desire to depart the Gaza region will be provided with safe passage to states who have approved their entry.
This twenty-point proposal foresees the Gaza Strip as “an area free from radicalization and terror that poses zero any danger to neighboring countries”. In a separate point, it declares the region will be “revitalized for the advantage of the Gaza residents, who have experienced immense suffering”.
Crucially, and opposing the perspective of certain Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners, the Israeli government will not occupy or take over the land, which was the site of 21 Israeli settlements before their residents were evacuated in the year 2005.
Nor will any individual be compelled to depart Gaza, the plan promises. Those who wish to leave will be permitted to do so without hindrance and allowed to come back.
Hamas as an entity will be prohibited from any role, “in any form”, in the upcoming leadership of the region.
Trump Urges Negotiators to ‘Accelerate Progress’ as They Assemble in the Egyptian Republic for Gaza Discussions
Donald J. Trump has called on representatives of Hamas and Israel assembling in Egypt for crucial talks targeting concluding the Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip to “act quickly,” remarking, in comments on Sunday, that there had been “extremely constructive” conversations.
The US president commented:
We have had highly favorable discussions with Hamas, and Countries from across the planet (Arab, Muslim, and various other countries) during the weekend, to free the captives, end the War in the Gaza region but, of greater importance, finally have long-desired stability in the Middle Eastern region.
These discussions have been highly productive, and moving quickly. Expert delegations will reconvene this Monday, in Egypt, to tackle and finalize the final details. Sources indicate that the initial stage should be completed within the week, and I am urging everyone to MOVE FAST.
The US envoy Witkoff is anticipated to participate in the talks, according to reports from Israel, alongside Israel’s negotiators and a Palestinian group chaired by Khalil al-Hayya, the assistant leader of the political bureau of the Hamas movement.
Al-Hayya is reportedly due to meet with mediators from Egypt and Qatar in the city of Cairo on Monday morning, before discussions in the resort city of Egypt of Sharm El Sheikh.
Nonetheless, Israel’s chief negotiator, strategic affairs minister Dermer, is expected to join discussions toward the end of the week, pending progress in the talks, as per multiple Israeli sources.
Positive outlook on a possible truce has grown worldwide, with officials from Western and Arab countries pressuring both Hamas and Israel to reach an agreement. On Sunday, the Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, spoke with Israeli PM Netanyahu and expressed support for the Trump plan, describing it as “the best chance for peace”, as per a readout.
