Oxford Union Future Leader Removed Due to Charlie Kirk Posts
The future president of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his controversial online comments about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against George Abaraonye reached the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in the United States.
According to reports, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.
The student leader is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.
Election Results
The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with results announced on this week.
Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.
The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.
Procedural Disputes
Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the vote tally had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His statement categorically refuted that any person appointed by the student had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Ongoing Dispute
The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been referred to the governing body and that he remained president-elect.
His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The message accused the union of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".
The statement indicated that if the student were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".
The Oxford Union had previously criticized the student's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with the activist at the union in spring.
